Relevant text reads: "Settlements began to be made in [Washington] township about 1822, and the following ten years many families settled here, among them a number of German families in the northern portion of the township. Among the early settlers are found the following names: Adam Engle, Frederic Higley, Henry Iles, Wm. Lashley, Jonathan Kimbal, Samuel Johnson, George Garrett, Wells Garrett, Rev. Mr. Poland, Wm. Buzzard and 'Squire Watts, the two latter being especialy adepts in hunting bears, deer and other wild game."
