Introduction

The Lynn L. Sams papers were in the care of Charles Payne until given to the ABA Research Center at the University of Maryland in 1991.  The majority of the collection can be found in SCPA Collections Room, Aisles C and D.  Parts of the collection are also found in the SCPA Workroom Oversize Storage and Paged Collections; these exceptions are noted in the inventory below.

The Lynn Sams Portrait Collection [Appendix] was originally deposited by Sams at the University of Michigan. Sams withdrew the collection on 16 May 1983, at which time it was transferred to the University of Maryland.  This collection is housed in the SCPA Personnel Photo File, CRII 5-3.

Biography

Bandsman and businessman, Lynn L. Sams (4 April 1896—17 March1990) was a founding member of the American Bandmasters Association, and a leader in the music industry. He served as editor of the ABA newsletter for many years and also served as that organization's historian—both in official and unofficial capacities.

Over his lifetime, Sams collected biographical and photographic materials documenting the history of the band in America and also the prominent people in the band world. Sams began his music career as a traveling salesman for the Conn Corporation and eventually became president of that company. Sams's early days as a traveling salesman became the basis for Meredith Willson's character Professor Harodl Hill from Willson’s musical The Music Man.

Sams was an activist in the musical instrument industry and was instrumental in the passing of the Excise Tax Repeal in 1965 on musical instruments. After leaving Conn in 1955, Sams started work at Buescher Instrument Company and eventually became president of that company. Sams's final years were devoted to the writing of a book, History of School Bands, which was never completed.

Scope and Content Note

The papers of Lynn L. Sams span the years 1913-1990.  The bulk of the material falls between 1940 and 1985.  During this period, Sams was primarily engaged in compiling information for and writing his book, History of School Bands.  The collection principally contains materials relating to the writing of this book.  An inventory of the Sams Portrait Collection, a gift of Sams to the ABA Research Center in 1983, is also included [Appendix; page 65].

In the years following World War I, Lynn L. Sams began to work for C.G. Conn Co. as a travelling salesman.  During this time as a salesman for Conn, Sams formed bands across the Midwest and developed a sales strategy for the traveling instrument salesman.  One of the key features of this plan was the development of the rental-purchase plan for instruments.  Sams' success resulted in his upward movement in the Conn organization, the ultimate point being when Sams was president of Conn.  After resigning from Conn, Sams accepted the position of vice-president of Buescher Band Instrument Co.

Sams' contributions to and involvement in the music industry assisted him in developing many contacts and personal associations throughout the music and entertainment fields.  Examples of these associations are those with film producer Jesse Lasky and the role Sams had as an advisor to a movie based on John Phillip Sousa's life; and Sams' involvement in the development of Meredith Willson's musical The Music Man, which was said to have used Sams' early career at Conn as a model for the character Prof. Harold Hill.  The associations with these people are documented in the letters, photographs and other items in the Biography Files (Series I) and the Photographs (Series IX).

An addition to his professional career in music, Sams was also involved in numerous professional associations dealing with music.  The American Bandmasters Association was the organization in which Sams was the most involved.  He was one of the founding members and attended the first ABA convention in 1930.  Sams served at the historian and the newsletter editor of the ABA Journal and was made an Honorary Life Associate Member in 1948.  He compiled biographies of many of the ABA members (which can be found in Series I Biography) and had an extensive portrait collection which he donated to the ABA Research Center (not part of this collection).  The items that document Sams' career in the music industry and his association with the ABA and other organizations are found in Series III, Professional and Commercial Activities.

Sams also had an interest in the history of bands in the United States and the development of the band movement.  In addition to the extensive biography files, Sams also compiled a set of Subject files that addressed specific bands, and the music industry.  These files are found in Series II, Subject Files.  This interest extended to a major project for Sams that resulted in the creation of the book History of School Bands.  This project lasted the majority of his life and was never completed.  Sams consulted correspondence, books, magazine and journal articles, dissertations and his own recollections as material for his book.  These items are found in Series 5, Books and Dissertations/Theses, Series VI, Books, and Series VII, Periodicals.  The manuscript and working notes for History of School Bands is found in Series IV, History of School Bands Manuscript.

Sams' interest in bands also extended to his personal collecting.  There are numerous record albums and tapes that feature the bands of his associates in the ABA.  These items are found in Series X Audio/Visual.  Included in this series are phonograph albums featuring Karl King, Merle Evans, and other collegues of Sams.  Some of the albums are inscribed by the performers.

As a result of his long career in the music industry and his associations through the professional organizations such as the ABA, MENC and the like, Sams received many awards such as the Music Industry Council Award (1979) and the Last Taxable Musical Instrument Award (1965).  These items as well as a collection of Convention Badges dating from the 1920s is found in Series VIII, Memorabilia/ Awards.

Series II, Subject Files

These files contain information from magazine and newspaper articles, and letters about the topics used as material for Sams' book on band history.  An attempt was made to keep the original order and folder titles, however, some titles were changed to clarify the contents or to divide folders into smaller, more specific categories.  Under topics such as Higher Education and School Bands, there were several folders with the same title.  In these cases, the folders were separated and given a general title [Higher Education] and a subtitle [Band Schools, etc.].  Some of the materials contain annotations by Sams.
