Aunt Lizzie’s Banana Cake     Elizabeth Decker (Lera and Ira’s sister)

 

Makes 2 layers or 1 loaf

 

1 c mashed bananas

½ c shortening

¼ c sour milk

1 tsp soda

½ tsp salt

½ c nuts cut

1 c sugar

2 c flour

2 eggs

½ tsp baking powder

½ tsp cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg

 

Cream sugar & shortening, add eggs.  Mix in bananas & alternate milk & sifted flour, soda, baking powder & salt.  Stir in nuts & vanilla.  Cook in mod 350 degrees oven.

 

 

 

Dutch Stew    Elizabeth Decker

 

Stir & brown slowly 1 lb ground meat in 1 ½ T of shortening.  Sprinkle over meat 1 ¼ t salt, 1 t dry mustard, 1/8 t pepper, 2T flour.  Mix well and stir in 2 ½ c water.  Add 1 cup pared cut up potatoes, 1 cup sliced carrots, 1 ½ c cut green beans, 1/3 c finely chopped onions.  Cover and boil slowly 10 mins.  Sift into bowl 1 ½ c prepared biscuit flour.  Stir in with fork 1/3 c sego milk with 1/3 c water.  Drop in with Tablespoon into stew.  Cover tight, cook 15 mins longer.  Stir into meat.  Mix 2/3 c hot sego milk.  Stir into dumplings.
